Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an intern at a small studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
